D&C Scripture Mastery #3 Practice Quiz

For this quiz I had the students discuss it on the chalk board.  Then I handed out this practice test.  I had them take the test.  When they were finished I had them turn the test over and write it again on the back with no prompts.  Then underneath that had to write the scripture reference for scripture Mastery 1 and 2.  They all did very well.

Celebrate the Golden Plates with a Chocolate Candy Treat, September 22!

Today is September 22, which is the anniversary of the day that Joseph Smith received the plates from Angel Moroni.  I thought that I would honor this day by giving my seminary students a little treat to help them remember this date.

I want to give a shout out to the original idea that comes from this post at Blue Skies Ahead

I realize that September 22 only comes around once a year, so I made 2 versions.  One is to celebrate September 22 and the other is a more generic version.   I got the phrase from this Mormon Ad:

Here are the printouts for you.  I printed mine on card stock.  To use this just click on the picture to make it large and then right click.  You can either save it into your pictures or you can copy and paste it into your printing program.

Happy Golden Plates Day:

It's worth more than it's weight in gold version:

Here's the writing for the top of the candies:

The candy that I used is Hershey's Nuggets in the gold wrapper.  I could only find the gold in the Milk Chocolate
with Toffee and Almonds flavor.

I used double sided tape to adhere the chocolates to the card stock base.  That way I would not melt the chocolate with a glue gun and it worked just fine.  Then I cut out the writings , folded it in half and used a piece of double sided tape to attach it to the candy.

For the ribbon marker down the center I used a little hot glue.  The students loved them!

I didn't have enough ribbon to add to all of mine, so I omitted that last step.  No one seemed to notice!

Seminary in a Sack - Collect items to help students remember Doctrine and Covenants Scripture Mastery

I got this idea from Seminary at Six AM's blog.  It just was such a fun idea and I wanted to do it for my class.

Below is a picture of the items that we put into the sack.  For every scripture mastery that we learned each student got a small item to put into the Seminary in a Sack.

********************************
Before anyone gets upset that I stole a bunch of wet wipes from Chick-fil-a, I just want to tell you that the wet wipes I bought for the kids were too big for the poster and I happened to have a smaller Chick-fil-a one in my purse, so I used it for the poster.
******************************************

I found these sacks on Amazon:

And I decided to make an iron on transfer to put on the front and the back.

I used Joleese Easy Image Transfer Sheets for light fabric.  I bought them at JoAnns.

Here is a printout for the one that I did.

If you want to use it just click on the picture to make it large, then save it into you pictures or copy and paste it into you printing program.

Here is a large version if you need it:

Once you have printed them onto your transfer paper (be sure to follow the directions) then cut out the transfer and lay the it in the center of the sack:

Then iron the transfer for the time indicated in your directions (about 30-40 seconds):

I ironed on both sides before I peeled of the paper backing.
My instructions said to let it cool completely,
then peel off the backing:

D&C ideas to put in the sack:

I printed out a wallet sized version of the above chart for the students to put in their seminary in a sack.

I also have a printout that I use to glue my charms on.  I had it printed professionally in an 8x10 photo so that it looks nice.  You can save it into your photos. If you are not doing the Seminary in a sack, I have a second printout that does not have the Seminary in a sack picture on it.  See below.

With the Seminary in a Sack:
Without the Seminary in a Sack:

The place that we found many of our charms was called Lucky Star on Amazon.  The search is terrible for the charms, but they are worth looking through for the price and the selection.  Here is the link:     http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=n%3A2617941011%2Cp_4%3ALucky+Star&ie=UTF8&qid=1411486889

Here are some close up pictures of the charms.

The students enjoyed collecting all of the charms throughout the year.  I had a great time coming up with ideas for each Scripture Mastery.  Some of them were difficult, but we got them all done.

D & C1:37-38 Scripture Mastery 2 Practice Quiz

I put together this quiz for Scripture Mastery 2, D & C 1:37-38. This way the students have a practice guide to help them in memorizing this scripture.

There are two quizzes per sheet.  Just click on the picture to make it large.  Then right click and save it into your pictures, or copy and paste it into your printing program.

Here is a target that I made to go with this scripture mastery.  To see additional targets go to the other scripture mastery links.

LDS Seminary at Sunrise

Every day when I drive to the church for seminary I notice the sun starting to rise.  I realized that it was coming over the mountain while I was teaching class.  Today we studied D&C chapter 1.  It is the introduction to the Doctrine and Covenants, dictated by God to Joseph Smith for the World.

I also adapted this for Old Testament.  We went outside to watch the Sunrise while reading Moses Chapter 2, the Creation.

Instead of discussing the scriptures and the background information, I had the students bring their scriptures out to the steps of the church and we held seminary outside where we could witness the sunrise as we read.

We started out with the Song "The Spirit of God", and then had our prayer and devotional.  After that I explained why we were having class outside.  Then we took turns reading D&C chapter 1.  When we were done I had them comment about what we had read.
I also explained that when Jesus was on the earth he would go into the high places to be near his father.  I told them that they could find a place where they could go to find spiritual insight to solve their problems, look for answers and be nearer to the Savior.  Most of us adults usually go to the temple, but at their age they don't have to opportunity to attend a session, or sit in the Celestial Room.

I ended by telling them that I wanted them to learn to love the scriptures and to turn to the Savior in their time of need.

LDS Scripture Mastery 1- Joseph Smith History 1:15-20 Word Strip Puzzle

I needed something to help my class pass off JSH 1:15-20.  I had heard that many teachers made the scriptures into puzzles by cutting the sentences into strips.  I search online to find a printout that I could use to do this, but could not find anything.  Soooooo, that meant that I had to make one myself.  I thought that maybe other teachers would find it helpful.

To make a copy for yourself click on the picture to make it larger.  Then just right click and save it into your pictures, or copy and paste it into your printing program.

Here is a picture of what the puzzle looks like cut into pieces:

Here is a good tip: print it out in several different colors on card stock. I used a rubber band to hold them together.  When you hand them out to the students make sure that none of the students sitting next to each other have the same color.  This way it will not be a nightmare if some of the puzzle pieces accidentally get mixed up.

I also made a target for this scripture mastery to play a game where the students can shoot nerf bullets at when the clue is given.  The targets are reversible.  I printed them out on card stock.
